About EECB
EECB is the only Ph.D. program at UNR covering the general areas of ecology, evolution and conservation biology. There are no departmental Ph.D. programs in these areas. The EECB Faculty is comprised of professors from a variety of UNR departments and affiliated institutions, including Biology, Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, the Desert Research Institute and the Biological Resources Research Center. Research and course work in the program focus on expanding our knowledge of biological processes and the application of this knowledge to the maintenance of biotic diversity. While most studies are centered in the Great Basin, the Mojave Desert or the Sierra Nevada, others are conducted in other parts of the US, and Africa and South America.
Initiated in 1991, the program has grown rapidly. Its success has been encouraged by four complementary events. First, the university has provided substantial financial support to the program for student stipends, recruitment, seminars and related expenses. Second we have hired, and continue to hire, a number of new, accomplished faculty with diverse interests. Third, our faculty has obtained major grants for the support of students and research. Finally, our students have achieved marked success in competitions for national fellowships and grants.
With a faculty-to-student ratio of about 1:1.4, students have ready access to a wide variety of expertise and enjoy a congenial atmosphere. Our learning environment is further enhanced by strong ties among a number of nationally competitive research groups. Also, faculty in a number of other UNR graduate programs have expertise of special interest to our graduate students. These programs include Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Environmental Science and Health, Hydrologic Sciences, Geography and Environmental Literature.
